Why certify my diamond with GIA?

Since GIA is the most respected diamond grading laboratory in the world, the results have credibility. In comparison, appraisals are often just an approximation of the quality of the diamond. The diamond grading process at GIA is much more extensive and reliable than any appraisal. Many jewelry appraisers are not true diamond graders. Therefore, a jewelry appraiser often inaccurately grades the actual quality of your diamond, and most diamond buyers are aware of this.

There are many guides to selling diamonds, tutorials for selling diamonds , and blogs regarding how to sell a diamond online or where to sell a diamond but most give advice and answers about buying / selling diamonds or how to buy / sell diamonds that are not very helpful. As described above, jewelry appraisals are overinflated and confuse a sellers into believing their diamond is worth far more than they can realistically get for their diamond. If you want to sell your diamond, the best way to sell a diamond is to have it GIA certified to assure you and the diamond buyer of the actual grade of the diamond. You are more likely to get a better diamond price quote and offer for your diamond if it is certified with GIA rather than with a jewelry appraisal. In addition, you will know the diamond's actual quality rather than having a diamond buyer tell you what they think the quality is.

Why is my appraisal from a GIA graduate different from an actual GIA Report?

GIA is also a learning institution. Many GIA graduates become appraisers, however an appraisal by a GIA graduate does NOT make your diamond GIA certified. Only an actual GIA laboratory can give your diamond this status.

Also, the cost of certifying your diamond is often less than a local appraisal. Example: A one carat certified with GIA only costs $100.00 plus shipping and insurance.
